They are used to smoothen or to remove damages and deformations on the sample surface which remain after the cutting process. During this process, self-adhesive grinding paper on an appropriate support disc is used in a grinding machine. The grinding process itself is performed in steps which build on each other: self-adhesive grinding paper is used in ever finer grits. This ever finer material removal process gradually results in a sample surface which is sufficiently smoothened to facilitate the subsequent polishing step. As opposed to polishing, no other liquids or suspensions are used during grinding using self-adhesive grinding paper. Instead, the bonded grinding particles serve to perform the material abrasion.
